LGBTQ+ Super Sixes unites Sussex Football
During the month of August, LGBTQ+ Super Sixes brought together 100+ members of the LGBTQ+ Community in Brighton.
Working in partnership with Albion in the Community and Brighton & Hove City Council, together we have not only provided playing opportunities, but we also brought people together, like never before.
The event ran once a week on a Thursday in August and was a Gender Diverse Recreational 6-a-side Festival. Thanks to a new pilot that The FA have sanctioned, we were able to organise an event that was open to all groups from LGBTQ+, transgender, non-binary and intersex players, plus allies.
On the final Thursday of the month the participants were joined by Brighton & Hove Albion Women’s stars, Fliss Gibbons and Kayleigh Green. Both players were a welcome addition to the event and spent their time speaking with the participants and supported them during their games.
Since the event, 50 participants were welcomed as guests to the Amex to watch the Brighton & Hove Albion Women vs. West Ham United Women.
Next up, the players are heading to Lewes FC to watch a women’s game, once again as guests, showing that local clubs can make a huge difference in welcoming supporters from the LGBTQ+ Community.
Throughout the event we managed to raise some funds for the Ledward Centre, a fantastic LGBTQ+ Centre in Brighton.
Jade Harker, our Development Lead, had this to say: “Each week we saw over 100 people in attendance enjoying a fun game of football, this was followed up with a social at the local pub Preston Brewery Tap for team drinks and pizza.
“The Preston Brewery Tap not only entered a team into the event but they also provided player discount cards to ensure that everyone had the opportunity to socialise after the football, this is what football is all about!”
