Paul Saunders HERO 2

Marathon running for Alzheimer's Society

Staff member Paul Saunders running Brighton Marathon!

Our Projects Manager, Paul Saunders, will be running the Brighton Marathon on 2 April 2023 in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society.

Paul, 60, has been in training for months for the event, which will see him and his fellow runners start in Preston Park, before heading down to Rottingdean, before continuing along the sea front and completing the 26 mile race at Hove Lawns.

Speaking ahead of the race, Paul said: “A couple of years ago I decided I would run my first marathon when I turned 60, along with completing 59 other things in the year.

“The main reason I’ve chosen the Alzheimer’s Society, is because my Mother lived her final years with dementia, which opened my eyes to something I had no knowledge of.

“I was always grateful to my GP who wisely prepared me for what the family future might look like.

“When The FA chose the Alzheimer's Society as their partner charity, they introduced a referral scheme, so that anyone linked to football can refer themselves or a loved one to Alzheimer's Society.

“I was keen to be a part of this and have since completed my referral training on behalf of Sussex County FA.”

The new referral pathways into Alzheimer’s Society services make it easier and quicker for players, coaches, referees, and staff in Sussex to access support or guidance needed when concerns arise about themselves or a loved one - contact Paul Saunders, Alzheimer's Referrer.

Members will benefit from practical and emotional support from Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Advisers, who provide practical advice, emotional support and guidance for the best next step.
