We’re in for an intriguing Cup Final on Sunday with Mid Sussex Youth’s West Hove Dynamos facing Sussex Sunday’s Eastbourne United, both of whom play up a year in under-14 divisions.

West Hove Dynamos manager, John Byrne, is no stranger to a big occasion having played in The FA Cup Final for Sunderland in the past but anticipates a strong test.

“It's an exciting achievement for the boys and we're all looking forward to what should be a good, competitive match.

“We've had some good games with Eastbourne United in tournaments and league games, things like that, so we know what we're up against.

“Mark's team are the benchmark at this age group, a good side with good players, and we'll have to play very well on the day to beat them.

“We've had very good games with them in the past like I said but they come in to this game as favourites without a doubt.

“We've got some good players as well though, match-winners, but there's been many close games with Eastbourne United, penalty shootouts etc. and it's a good challenge for us.”

Ultimately though, John wants his side to carry on the good work they’ve done to get there.

“You need a bit of luck along the way and a good run through which we've had, but it's a great achievement for the boys, they're all local lads that have played together since under-7s.

“I'll be telling them to enjoy themselves, compete, work hard in the game, try to stop them playing and play when we have the ball ourselves. Cup finals are hard, I've played in an FA Cup Final myself and they can pass you by, they just need to enjoy it.”

Eastbourne United manager, Mark Newnham-Reeve, is unable to attend Sunday’s final but believes this game is the icing on the cake for his side’s journey so far.

“It's a fantastic opportunity for us. We entered it two years ago up an age group and got to the Quarter Final. Then we were still in it last year before COVID struck so it's great for the boys to finally get this chance.

“They're a talented group of boys, the majority of which, we've had for a long time so it's great they have the opportunity to show what they can do in front of a decent crowd on a good pitch.”

Mark’s side are no stranger’s to a big game but is hoping his side don’t become fazed by the occasion.

“We've played in big games before, national competitions, but they aren't fully aware of what this game entails yet. They're just excited to play in a final.

“I'm hoping they just go out and play the way they know how to play football which is getting the ball down and moving it. I hope the stage and pressure forces them into things they wouldn't normally do.

“I just want them to play the way that I know they can and I think they will on the big pitch with a very good surface and I know West Hove will try and do the same so it should be a great showcase for under-13s football.”

Lastly, he was very complimentary of his opponents in the final: “We know West hove Dynamos really well, we've kind of grown up together! I actually coach some of their boys as a Brighton & Hove Albion coach so to say they are good friends is probably an understatement!

“I know John very well and is son Bobby plays in my Sussex Schools team. There's a lot of good teams in the area but I think these are two of the strongest teams that could have got to the final which doesn't always happen.

“Most importantly I just want them to enjoy the experience of a cup final. Go out and play how you'd normally play, express yourselves and do what they've done to get them to this point.”
