Volunteer of the Year: Mick Croft

The FA and McDonald's Grassroots Football Awards

We are delighted to announce Mick Croft from Crowborough Athletic has won our Volunteer of the Year Award as part of The FA and McDonald's Grassroots Football Awards.

The awards aim to recognise and reward volunteers, match officials, clubs and leagues across the county who have made a difference to grassroots football in their local community.

Mick is the President of Crowborough Athletic and has been associated with the club for over 75 years.

On a home first team match-day you will find Mick, affectionately known as ‘Crofty,’ cleaning the toilets and the clubroom getting everything ready before people arrive, the changing rooms are already cleaned and prepared as he likes to do those earlier in the week!

Despite being over 80-years-old he has made the ball boy job his own. You can guarantee as soon as a ball flies out of the ground it will be shortly followed by Mick. He searches high and low for each match ball, climbing trees and even onto roofs to ensure that each ball is safely returned, he even names each ball.

In short, ‘Crofty’ is Mr Crowborough Athletic. He has held just about every position in the club that there is to be held and has cleaned, fixed and helped build more things in and around the club then the rest of all the other volunteers put together.

He is ever present at first team games, home and away. On away matches he helps with the kit, and always ensures that the away changing room is left just as the team found it. Put simply, he is gem and irreplaceable!
