Albion Powerchair star makes England debut

Gregg Baxter shines for England winning the Powerchair Nations Cup

Brighton-based Gregg Baxter was named in the England Powerchair squad for the European Powerchair Football Association Nations Cup in Finland.

The 17-year-old, a member of Brighton & Hove Albion’s Powerchair team which is run by Albion in the Community (AITC), featured throughout the tournament.

Gregg was called up following his impressive performances playing for his club and made his England debut in goal for the opening match of the tournament - a 14-0 victory over Austria.

In an even more convincing win, Baxter kept his place in goal beating Northern Ireland 17-0 and keeping another clean sheet.

He was rested in their third win against Finland and also missed out on their later group match against France, in which they were dealt their first defeat of the tournament losing 3-0.

The defeat was only a minor set-back for the Three Lions though as they went on to win the tournament and beating the favourites, France in the Final on penalties.

Following the experience Gregg reflected: “I was very pleased with how the tournament went personally. Now I want to keep my place in the squad, with the World Cup in Australia in 2021 the next goal.”

Sussex County FA Director, Tony Kybett, joined the team for the tournament over in Finland, and said: "Making his England debut Gregg did very well, his club Brighton & Hove Albion must be very proud and not a bad record so far, appearing in one major tournament for his country and coming home with the trophy, let's hope the first of many!"
