Sussex clubs shine at Pokémon Youth Futsal Cup

Well done to all our clubs who took part!

Last weekend five Sussex teams represented the county in the annual Pokémon Youth Futsal Cup Regional Finals at the Score Centre in Leyton, London.

Some of the best Futsal clubs and Football academies fielded teams at Under-10s, Under-12s, Under-14s and Under-16s level.

From Sussex, Burgess Hill Town Youth Under-10s, Hove Park Colts Under-12s and Eastbourne Borough Under-16s represented us in the girls’ category.

Meanwhile, our boys were represented by AFC Langney Under-10s and Montpelier Villa Under-16s White.

We’d like to offer our congratulations to Montpelier Villa, who won their age group and will represent Sussex in the Pokémon Youth Futsal Cup National Finals at the University of Wolverhampton on the 8th to the 9th of July.

The boys have been playing Futsal for nearly 10 years, and in that time have even been to Barcelona to challenge the players.

The tournament consisted of four games against some high-level Futsal academies, which proved no problem for Montpelier, with the team winning all their games, scoring nine goals, and only conceding one in the process.

Sonny Lucas (goalkeeper) and Louie Day (pivot) finished joint top tournament scorers with three goals each.

Speaking after the tournament, Head Coach, Chris Day, said: ''It was a fantastic chance for the boys to challenge themselves against some of the best Futsal players from the south, as the players all love Futsal as a sport in its own right, and also the way it helps them be better footballers.''

James Chatfield from Eastbourne Borough Under-16s Girls added: “It was a very well organised tournament with a great atmosphere on the day, competitive but fun.

“Our girls thoroughly enjoyed it!”

Ryan Payne of AFC Langney Under-10s Boys said: Everyone had an amazing time, and we’re all so grateful for the opportunity. Hopefully we will be back to compete at the Under-12s level next time!”

Finally, our Development Officer, Paul Ofei-Kwatia said: “I’d like to extend my thanks to the Sussex Women and Girls, Horsham and District Youth, Mid Sussex Youth and Sussex Sunday Youth Leagues for their support with the provision of Futsal in the County,” he said.

“We have seen continued interest in Futsal with more teams participating and we are proud to have a team representing Sussex in the Pokémon Youth Futsal Cup National Finals for the second year running.

“We look forward to working with more leagues, clubs, teams and coaches to deliver more opportunities for our youth and adult players.”
