Worthing 10k HERO

Staff run Worthing 10k for disability football

Well done all of you for your fundraising efforts!

Last Sunday, staff members Lisa Benn, Paul Saunders, Beckie Street and Charlie Thurgood undertook the Worthing 10K in memory of our late chairman, Mathew Major.

On a very hot and windy morning, 1,500 runners gathered on the seafront, setting off at 9:30am, with a blast of a horn on Marine Parade.

The runners set off on a route that took them along Worthing Seafront, and then back down once again to finish where they began.

First to finish out of the group, was seasoned runner Charlie, who clocked in a personal best of 45 minutes and 32 seconds.

“It was a great privilege to run the Worthing 10K on behalf of the Sussex FA in memory of Mathew Major,” said Charlie, “It was a thoroughly enjoyable race and getting a PB was the cherry on the top of the cake.”

For Lisa, Sunday's race just happened to be her very first: "I am so pleased that my first run was for such a meaningful purpose," said Lisa.

"The energy and enjoyment displayed by all runners is often displayed by those involved in football, and always disability football!

"For me, the run was a great reminder of why we do what we do and the ability we have to bring enjoyment to peoples lives through football."

Beckie celebrated her first six months with the Sussex County FA by completing the course with her husband, Chris.

“It was really great to be able to do something positive as a team, and seeing everyone at the finish was fantastic,” said Beckie.

“The smiles in our medal photo says it all!”

The idea to fundraise for the Disability Football League was inspired by the memory of our late Chairman, Mathew Major.

Matt passed away last month and was a great supporter of every area of Sussex football, but his passion was disability football where he was instrumental in making us the first County FA with a Disability Representative Squad

The fundraising here at Sussex County FA doesn’t stop here though, with Steve Atkins, one of our directors, embarking on his 100 mile walk around grounds in Sussex in just two days’ time.

If anyone would like to support our staff 10K team or Steve’s 100-mile walk, all in aid of the Sussex Disability Football League and in memory of Mathew Major, please add donations to Steve Atkins’ Just Giving page.
