Black History Month Football Festival

Football Festival to celebrate Black History Month

Free to enter tournament to raise awareness for racial equality

To celebrate Black History Month, we will be hosting a free-to-enter tournament on Sunday 10 October from 1-4pm.

The tournament aims to raise awareness for racial equality and inclusion in football as we try to make the local game more inclusive. It will take place at our HQ, Culver Road, Lancing.

Football Development Lead Jade Harker supports the event saying: “Equality is at the heart of everything we do here at Sussex County FA, and we are proud to support all of our communities here in Sussex.

“We are delighted to support Black History Month by putting on this event and we encourage our football network to stop, listen and learn during the Month of October and beyond.”

Alongside the football, we will have FA Diversity & Inclusion Officer for the South East, Daniel Fenner, joining us. He will be talking through his journey in football as a coach and will offer the chance for the players to ask questions around his coaching journey.

Our Inclusion Advisory Group (IAG) has said how important the event is for the county. IAG member Mark Doidge has said: “Football is the most popular sport in the world and played in every country around the world.

“The roots of football are in England, but they spread through trade and Empire, resulting in football having players from around world. From Arthur Wharton, John Cother, Emma Clarke, and Andrew Watson through to Frank Soo, Cyrille Regis and Viv Anderson, the history of football is also a Black history.

“Events before, during and after the European Championships highlight the racism that players and fans have experienced, but showcasing the long and distinguished history of Black players in the British game goes some way to celebrating these players’ achievements and tackle the division in our sport.”

This tournament will be for adult male (16+) players, but if there is enough interest, we will arrange fixtures for other categories also. We will play in a 6v6 format so the minimum number of players per team is 6. The maximum number of players is 10. If you have more than 10, we suggest you enter multiple teams.
