Sussex progress in Disability Cup

Disability squad through to quarter-finals

Our Disability Representative Squad have progressed the quarter-finals of the South East Regional Disability 11v11 Competition following wins over Chelsea, Southampton, Woking and Wandgas.

Match 1 vs. Chelsea Foundation

Sussex started their defence of the South East Regional Competition with a tough looking fixture vs. Chelsea Foundation.

The reigning champions settled into the game quickly and took the lead on 5 minutes when James Smith volleyed in from close range after a wonderful cross into the box.

It was all Sussex from the opening goal and were rarely threatened. The result was then made safe when Smith was played in early from a free kick and slotted home to make it 2-0 and get off to the perfect start.

Match 2 vs. Southampton

Sussex then maintained a 100% start with another 2-0 win, this time at the hands of Southampton.

Frazer Standen, on his debut, opened the scoring in the fifth minute striking in with real confidence. Again, Sussex were able to control the game and secured the victory on 12 minutes when Dave Lambert headed in a cross from Standen.

Plenty of other chances were created, but the score remained at 2-0, for Sussex to pick up their second victory.

Match 3 vs. Woking Wolves

On paper this looked like a crucial game for Sussex, against a strong Woking Wolves Team.

Sussex clicked into gear very early and took the lead on 4 minutes. Standen and Lambert combined, with Lambert cutting in, feigning to shot, and then powering a shot home.

A minute later, Standen played Smith through and he scored with ease to make it 2-0. Jack Hammond, another debutant, made it 3-0 with a strong finish following a ricochet.

Lambert added another, following another great pass from Standen and then completed his hat-trick following great work from Kieron Nugent. Lambert added a fourth late on to complete a comfortable 6-0 victory for Sussex.

Match 4 vs. Wandgas

In their final match of the day, Sussex looked to confirm qualification in the next round with a 5-0 win over Wandgas.As the weather deteriorated, the performances from Sussex did not, and they powered to victory. Nugent, and Tom Rogers combined well down the left, teeing up Smith to score from close range. Standen continued to be the King of the Assist, as he set up Rogers to score a deserved goal.

Ben Wray then headed home from a corner to make it 3-0. Josh Lomas grabbed a fourth when, in acres of space, skewed a shot into the corner.

Finally, Dylan Greaves-Lord used his pace and power down the left wing to drive the ball into the far corner to score. That completed a comprehensive 5-0 victory.

15 goals and none conceded made it a perfect afternoons work for Sussex which secured their progress into the next round. They showed their quality when they needed to and great team spirit throughout.
