Willingdon Athletic delivers on pledge

Willingdon Athletic have delivered on their disability football pledge by improving their clubs disabled access.

Previously, steps were the only way to access the clubs facilities, now, thanks to funding from the local council, the club has a brand new ramp leading up to the entrance alongside new steps and a new toilet facility.

Club Secretary Brian Kensett had this to say about their pledge: “We are very pleased with the changes, and it means that anyone who visits the ground can get to the pavilion and the new toilet facility, which was built especially to the side.

“We felt it was important that people with disabilities were not excluded from enjoying watching our games or visiting the ground, and that they are made to feel welcome as part of the community.

“We also wanted to provide any club that uses our facilities the opportunity to include their own supporters with disabilities.

“We hope this will have a significant impact on supporters, and people will feel good about bringing a friend, family member, colleague or whoever to visit our club safe in the knowledge that everyone is welcome!”

Jade Harker, Sussex County FA Disability Development Officer said: “Pledges like these are so very important to the development of all aspects of the disability game here in Sussex.

“Willingdon have gone above and beyond to ensure that all supporters not only have access to their games but are also well accommodated, and I look forward to visiting the club to see the changes in person soon.”

Looking to the future for the club Brian said: “We don’t know exactly what we will do next, but one idea is to invite people with disabilities to join our committee and club meetings so they can speak out about things they feel are important.

“For now the club will proudly display our Disability Football Pledge card from the Sussex County FA and encourage other clubs to make a pledge.”
