Rusk eyes Community Shield success

Manager Simon Rusk admitted lifting the Parafix Sussex Senior Cup was a nice way for his Brighton & Hove Albion Under-23s to finish last season...

Brighton & Hove Albion vs. Shoreham
Sussex Community Shield in aid of Benevolent Fund
Date: Tuesday 1st August 2017
Kick-off: 7.15pm
Venue: Sussex County FA HQ, Culver Road, Lancing, West Sussex, BN15 9AX

His young charges completed what he labelled a solid season by beating his previous club Crawley Town 3-0 after extra time at the Amex back in early May.

As a player Rusk helped Crawley earn promotion to the Football League before a knee injury ended his playing career. However, he then played a big part in the youth set-up at the Checkatrade.com Stadium before moving on to their more established professional rivals on the coast.

Rusk does not envisage the Albion's first season in the Premier League causing too many changes in the aims and structure of the younger team. "We have a strong Academy and everything seems to be in place from top to bottom," he said.

"We just need to get the momentum going with what we're doing on the grass and that means we have to cultivate a strong winning attitude. We must strive to be the best we can and that is particularly important as the reward could be a place in a Premier League team."

The youngsters have already had a highly useful training match at Arsenal and also played Celtic last week. They also enjoyed a training camp in Portugal and are now working towards full fitness.

For that there is nothing better than a competitive match and Shoreham will hope to provide that at Culver Road on Tuesday.

It is not known if young Norwegian midfielder Mathians Normann will be playing after joining on a three-year deal from Second Division side FK Bodo/Glimt but the under-23s still have much the same squad as last season.

Rusk said: "There may be one or two ins and outs in the next week or so but this is a game we want to win and perform well in."

Entry prices for the Sussex Community Shield in aid of Benevolent Fund are as follows:
