Cowfold vs. Roffey
Sussex Intermediate Challenge Cup Final in memory of Matthew Grimstone and Jacob Schilt
Date: Tuesday 11th April 2017
Venue: Sussex County FA, Culver Road, Lancing, West Sussex, BN15 9AX
Cowfold will be hoping its third time lucky when they face local rivals Roffey in this season's Sussex Intermediate Challenge Cup Final.
This will be their third appearance in the final in the last six years and both other games ended in defeat.
Manager Ant Parsons said: "In the final against Hurstpierpoint (2014) we just didn't turn up and were battered (4-0) but the game against Eastbourne Town Reserves (2011) was much closer (1-0)." Parsons was on the bench in 2011 but was solely the manager in the last appearance at Culver Road.
However, despite now being 52 he has been called out of retirement this season when in the fourth round away to Worthing United under-21s he had only twelve players. He was the lone sub and with three minutes remaining put himself on in readiness for the penalty shootout to follow.
"I used to be the club's regular penalty taker and so I thought I'd bring myself on so I could take a penalty in the shootout," he explained. "It was 4-4 when they missed and I scored our last penalty to take us through."
While Parsons is not planning to figure as a player in the final, his 22-year-old son Luke is a central midfielder who is very much part of the current line-up.
"Being local rivals with Roffey should add quite a bit to the final," said the Cowfold boss. "Quite a few of the players have played for both clubs over the years."
Tim Penlington only took charge of Roffey this season and despite his goal of a top three finish now looking unlikely, the team at least have a big county cup final to relish.
The former Crawley Down Gatwick boss had been out of football for eighteen months before being offered the job by Dave Jeal and believes it should be an interesting final against Cowfold. "Probably the league position of both teams doesn't do either of us justice," he said.
"Our league season has been indifferent where there have been too many draws which we failed to turn into wins but it's good to have a county final to look forward to."
He recalls reaching a county final when at Turners Hill: "We were 1-0 up against Pease Pottage, who were two divisions higher than us, but we then hit the bar and after that their quality showed as they went on to beat us 4-1."
He is keen not to suffer another county cup final defeat but with opposite number Parsons equally determined, something has to give on a night when the final is dedicated to Matthew Grimstone and Jacob Schilt, the Worthing United players tragically killed in the Shoreham Airshow disaster.
Entry prices for the final are as follows:
£5.00 Adult (17+)
£3.00 Concession (65+ and students with valid student ID card)
