Young referees attend St. George’s Park

Three young Sussex referees attended the Young Referees Development Programme (YRDP) at St. George’s Park over the weekend of 18th and 19th July...

Stuart Mallows, Dan Jeffery and Craig Simpson (as pictures above left to right) headed north for the conference, where the main aims were to provide opportunities to develop their skills as referees, develop a culture of learning from refereeing experiences and to offer help and guidance on the technical aspects of refereeing.

Following the conference, Craig Simpson reported: “The YRDP was a weekend spent with like-minded officials all eager to fulfil their potential and gain as much knowledge from the weekend as possible.

“Throughout the weekend we had multiple sessions aimed at preparing us for our journey through the refereeing ladder. The importance of body image was continuously highlighted throughout the weekend, and the session I found most valuable was 'Working together - Doing the right thing!' This session focussed on how to work with neutral assistants and as a neutral assistant, this covered how best to motivate your team, how to support the referee and how to deal with managers post match.

“Our practical sessions encouraged us to find fun ways of pushing ourselves in our training in order to reach a higher level of fitness. The idea of finding a fitness partner to compete and challenge against in order to push yourself was encouraged. Our laws of the game test highlighted the importance of knowing the laws inside out and prompted many people to re-read the interpretation of the laws section.”
