Safe Recruitment of Volunteers

The FA requests that the Welfare Officer oversees the completion of FA Enhanced CRB Disclosures for individuals at the Club or League. The Welfare Officer is named as the verifier with The FA CRB Unit and it is their responsibility to assess who within the Club or League should be checked and to verify the CRB application form using FA guidance.

Anyone who has the following role with children or vulnerable adults in football should complete an FA Enhanced CRB Disclosure:
Caring/training/supervising/sole charge/counselling and advising.

Individuals who are in decision-making roles regarding the welfare of children in football should also complete an FA Enhanced CRB disclosure.

You will appreciate that some individuals are not eligible to complete an FA Enhanced CRB Disclosure although they are actively involved in football. The role of the individual must meet the criteria outlined above. The FA CRB Unit will not be able to progress an FA Enhanced CRB Disclosure unless the individual is eligible to apply for one.

Please refer to The FA CRB Unit who will be able to advise you on who is eligible to complete a FA Enhanced CRB disclosure.

The CRB application process is only one part of safe recruitment in football. FA Enhanced CRB Disclosures should be used in the appointment of volunteers along with an interview and references.

The FA has developed an online system which is available via http://crbonline.thefa.com which gives Club Secretaries and Club Welfare Officers access to the status of CRB checks at your Club. It is called Club Safeguarding Children Report.

Access for Club Welfare Officers to Safeguarding Online is available if you request a password via the login page. In order to be eligible to access Safeguarding Online, the Club Welfare Officer will need to have an “accepted” FA Enhanced CRB Disclosure via The FA CRB Unit and have attended The FA Safeguarding Children Workshop.

Safeguarding Online shows whether an individual’s CRB Disclosure is “accepted” or it will show “in progress” which means that the CRB Disclosure is still being progressed in the system. It also lists who at the Club has attended The FA Safeguarding Children Workshop.

It is best practice for an individual to renew their CRB Disclosure every three years.

Further information on the CRB process can be found at http://thefa.com/TheFA/WhatWeDo/CRB.aspx or by contacting The FA CRB Unit by phone: 0845 2108080 or email: crb@thefa.com.
